A little over a week ago, I was assisting a Sault Tribe Elder in sorting through a pile of new prescriptions to be called in. During a call to the office of one of the Elders physicians to inquire about the status of a particular drug, I was told that we would not likely be able to pick up the necessary prescriptions from the Sault Tribe pharmacy that day because it had been broken into.
News travels fast in the Soo's small community and by the next day several tribal members were discussing the break-in and the likelihood that it was an inside job. Since the pharmacy is located on the second floor and the facility is normally closed after regular daytime office hours, how did the thief gain access? Was entry gained by damaging doors or windows from the main level? Are there workers in the building after hours? Are there alarms or motion detectors as one would expect and, if so, were they tripped? What sort of drugs were stolen?
So the question remains, why was the break-in not reported in the local newspaper? If this were any other local pharmacy, this break-in would have been newsworthy enough to find a place in the otherwise boring Sault Evening News. Who is the source of the cover-up and why?
Recently, news through-the-grapevine spoke of the indictment of Joe McCoy, tribal chairman, for malicious destruction which apparently stemmed from an incident where a young person was said to have been a victim of assault at the hands of McCoy. I suppose someone could obtain the actual paper proof but why bother?
If we can't rely on the local newspaper, the local police or the Sault Tribe to report serious business regarding our tribe,then the only alternative is to discuss it amongst ourselves, create our own details and decide for ourselves whether it's fiction or non-fiction. Watch it though...the evil doers among you will tell on you.

Twenty Michigan groups urge Senate to pass legislation to safeguard America’s wildlife and natural resources from the negative impacts of global warming...
Michigan – Twenty sportsmen, conservation and outdoor recreation groups from Michigan today joined nearly 600 organizations from across the country in calling on the Senate to pass comprehensive climate and energy legislation that not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also dedicates a significant portion of funding towards helping our wildlife and natural resources that are currently threatened by climate change.
“From providing us with safe drinking water to sustaining our outdoor economy, Michigan’s natural resources keep our communities healthy, our families happy, and our businesses thriving,” said Grenetta Thomassey, Policy Director, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council. “As a lifelong conservationist, I’m proud to be part of such a diverse coalition of interests rallying around a common cause. Together, we urge the Senate to put us on the right path by dedicating funding from climate change legislation to help safeguard our waters, lands and wildlife for future generations.”
All the groups agree that in order to realistically tackle the existing and forecasted impacts facing our treasured wild places and animals, the Senate will need to dedicate approximately 5% of the total allowances from a climate bill towards safeguarding our natural resources from the negative impacts of climate change. Here in Michigan, Senators Levin and Stabenow are being called on to champion these provisions as climate change legislation moves through the Senate.
Healthy natural systems provide clean water, clean air and protect communities from catastrophic weather-related disasters, ranging from hurricanes to floods to forest fires. In Michigan there are 1.7 million hunters and anglers who spend $3.4 billion annually, which support 46,000 jobs. Outdoor recreation accounts an overall annual contribution of $730 billion to the national economy, supporting 6.5 million jobs.
Local, state and federal agencies, tribes and fish, wildlife and land managers are critically short of funding needed to effectively respond to the combination of the challenges posed by a changing climate.
“The threat of climate change to our natural world is unprecedented,” said Lynne Weaver, Mackinac Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. “To meet this challenge our local resource managers need new dedicated resources to employ safeguards on a scale never before seen.”
The groups are urging the Senate to develop climate legislation that will establish a national policy framework to begin addressing the impacts of climate change on our natural resources; provide increased scientific capacity, coordination and information sharing; and dedicate 5% of the total allowance value to federal, state and tribal agencies.

JUST THROW THE LOGIC OUT THE WINDOW

First of all, I have never been a staunch Democrat, Republican or any other political affiliation. It has always been my stand on the issues that drove me to the voting booths…until now.
Posters showing Obama as an African witch doctor, angry citizens saying they don’t want to become a guinea pig for population control, signs that say “Obama…Commander in Thief”, references to Michelle Obama as “Blackie O”, protestors dressed in confederate soldier uniforms, Obama’s face imposed on a skull and crossbones flag, posters with Obama dressed as a Muslim, swastikas representing Nazism being used by white supremists in protest of a black president while, at the same time, pointing to Obama as being Hitler, ‘tea party’ protestors ….where is the logic in all of this?
What does health care reform and providing those who can’t afford health care with options along with choices for those that already have health care have to do with racism and Republican politics? Absolutely nothing until we elected a black president who got there because the vast majority of Americans wanted the changes he proposed. What does racism and Republican politics seem to have in common? It would appear that the election of a Democratic black president has publicly exposed the similarities and common ground of the two groups.
What nerve do I have to suggest that there is an association between Republicans and racists? The simple fact that not one single person that I have had the ‘Obama’ discussion with has been a Democrat….not one. Where do I get off making accusations of racism when these protestors simply want to save us from a socialist, communist government?
Let’s remove the obvious racist indicators. Gone are those that show Obama as an African witch doctor, gone are those that call the First Lady “Blackie O”, away with those Muslim religion haters, out with the confederates who fought against freeing the black slaves...and that leaves who? Most Americans would connect the Swastika to Hitler, the racist German leader who ordered the murder of millions of human beings simply because they were Jewish and not Christians. Republican protestors are acting out with the assumption that Obama is a Muslim because of his name. Hello…does this mean that everyone with the name of Ted is really a serial killer just as Ted Bundy was? Besides, even if Obama was a Muslim, which he isn’t, don’t we have freedom of religion in this country? Do our freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution only apply to some, but not all? So with all those racial implications out of the picture, what’s left?
What about the ‘tea party’ protestors? If they had done their historical research, protestors would be aware of the racial implications and the fact that colonialists boarded a ship disguised as Indians to destroy the tea in protest of it being taxed. The tea party protestors hid their identity and the truth of who they represented while pointing the finger at the American Indians and falsely representing a large portion of the population.
The only logical reason for protest would be the cost of health care reform but how much health care could have been purchased if not for the trillions spent on the Bush wars? “Operation Desert Storm” and now the Iraqi war cost the United States taxpayers trillions and lives and what did we get for our investment? We can count the death toll for those actions unlike Sarah Palin’s whacked out logic of future predictions of death panels for the elderly. Whoa…and she actually ran for vice president...under the Republican ticket
In their desperation to maintain control, the Republican Party threw the logic out the window and opened the door to racism and revolution. If their leaders can’t have a war outside the US, might as well have one inside. Closing tax loopholes and going after tax dodgers to pay their fair share might help foot the health care bill. Try this: throw the truth of Republican politics and racism out the window and hang onto the logic instead.

When revenues topped it's set percentage, what happened to amounts above that? Sucked away like the foam on a glass of beer? Let me say this one more time...very, very, very, very suspicious!
Maybe Sault Tribe members should demand a complete audit by the firm of their choice and consider a class action suit for damages.

Bankruptcy seems to be treating Greektown Casino quite nicely: The casino and hotel reported revenue of $30.6 million in August, an increase of 14 percent over the same month a year ago, according to data released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
It's the fifth straight month of increased revenue for the 10-year-old casino and hotel.
While both MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino continue to pull in more revenue than Greektown, their numbers continued to decline.
• MGM Grand pulled in $44 million in August, down 12 percent from last year
• MotorCity brought in $36.9 million last month, down 10 percent from 2008
Combined, Detroit's three casinos pulled in more than $111 million in adjusted gross receipts and paid more than $10 million in state wagering taxes.

ANYTHING BUT THE TRUTH....

Little more than a year after the Sault Tribe entered another phase of new leadership, the members of the tribe are more in the dark than ever before. All member meetings outside of the five units have ceased to exist. Members living throughout the lower peninsula of Michigan have been blindsided by their tribal leaders. Member loyalty is not something the board needs or wants since they have chosen to distance themselves from the majority of their constituents.
Instead the Sault Tribe Chairman and Board of Directors depend on the added cost of a public relations firm to state what is necessary to avoid direct communications with the members and the public. Our leaders have completely lost focus on the difference between truth and lies leaving the members right back where they were prior to the election of 2004; in the dark with the remaining employees afraid to open their mouth in protest. It’s not just the employees who have concerns about ‘crying out-loud’. Tribal members who use the medical, dental and Elder-care services also have to keep their tongues in check for fear of retribution and loss of services. Little is sacred to the Tribal Controllers, including the health and well-being of tribal Elders, with the exception of their own paychecks and positions of power.
Yet, there are still those that hang onto their belief that things are better now that their favorite leaders are working together again. Are they victims of Stockholm Syndrome, which is a psychological condition in which those taken hostage sympathize with or become emotionally involved with their captors? Victims of Stockholm Syndrome have no need for the truth because those whose minds are controlled have no need to know that their captor is a helluva liar.
With all the added costs to cover up the truth along with all the legal fees and other costs associated with trying to keep a sinking ship afloat, it makes me wonder how much could have been saved if across-the-board cuts were made that included the chairman and directors family members who are still employed at a nice better-than-a-living wage with no fear of losing their jobs in the future. Add to that, board perks of unnecessary travel, electronics equipment, free meals and trips to faraway places that bring nothing of value back to the tribe.
Nearly four hundred thousand dollars were spent to meet the demands of the membership to hold a Constitutional convention to plug the holes in the existing one, but the board refuses to allow the members to vote on the amendments. They also refuse to address the concerns of the members that the Election Committee is nicely packaged with family members of the elected chairman and several board members. Since other tribes have rotating committees and term limits, it is suspicious that the Sault Tribe does not. It makes me wonder if the members of the Sault Tribe will ever hear ‘Nothing but the Truth’ ever again.

A KIND OF HUSH...

Several days ago, while chasing rainbows in search of sun and a beach with no dark clouds hovering, I was overcome with boredom tinged with a little frustration. I had already gone speed-racing down the St. Mary’s River in my little red kayak but the ominous clouds rolling in from the horizon kept me in close proximity to the shoreline and the shelter of my car. It’s unusual to see the beaches I frequent throughout the summer so devoid of human activity. The waterways, usually alive with boats of all kinds, were silent with only the sounds of waves tossed up from this summer’s endless supply of wind.
Hours spent daily in front of a computer tapping away to the voice of my own thoughts, reading the words of anonymous emails and occasionally responding to the rants of internet trolls left me wanting for real human communication. Deciding where to dine, a companion and I were prepared to drive fifty miles or so in search of people but thought better of it in light of the price of gas and my determination to burn as little of it as possible.
Finally, we decided to stay put in the Soo and check out the buffet at the casino. Surely there would be people there to observe and even talk to. We noticed the quiet from the minute we walked in the door and the lack of people and noise continued as we made our way to the restaurant. Only a dozen or so diners were there but it was still early. There seemed to be no shortage of wait staff prepared to care for the dinner crowd that never came. Still it was good to hear the light chatter of customers and staff interacting.
Suddenly, there was a hush that fell over the room. As I strained to find the source behind the silence, my eyes landed on a table at the front of the restaurant. Making themselves comfortable amid the uncomfortable silence they created were several members of the Sault Tribe Board of Directors. The most notorious of all had invaded our pleasant dinner experience. Within seconds, I knew that I would not get my money’s worth from the buffet because my appetite just threw up.
The stare-down between my eyes and theirs pushed my plans to have a pleasant dinner to the back burner. I wondered how one board member could get her fork to face without spilling the contents onto her shabby chic attire since her eyes were upon me the entire time. One board member peeked over the shoulder of another for a quick look while the baddest of the bad repeatedly turned away when I caught his eyes peering at me.
When the partial board headed upstairs for a meeting, a patron on his way to the buffet said, “Thank goodness they’re gone” and the sounds of happy chatter returned as relief washed away the hush that had permeated the room just moments earlier.
Several days ago, while chasing rainbows in search of sun and a beach with no dark clouds hovering, I was overcome with boredom tinged with a little frustration. I had already gone speed-racing down the St. Mary’s River in my little red kayak but the ominous clouds rolling in from the horizon kept me in close proximity to the shoreline and the shelter of my car. It’s unusual to see the beaches I frequent throughout the summer so devoid of human activity. The waterways, usually alive with boats of all kinds, were silent with only the sounds of waves tossed up from this summer’s endless supply of wind.

Spiritual Leader Attacks AJC Council Member

Sault Ste. Marie, Mi...Head of the Sault Tribe Cultural Department, Cecil Pavlat, attacked AJC council member, Nathan Wright, at a recent meeting in the tribal culture building.
Were it not for Mr. Wright's prudent restraint, an ugly physical confrontation would have been the likely outcome.
Tribal employee Pavlat was allowed to continue his attack, without interference by tribal officials who were in attendance...leading this writer to believe that Mr. Pavlat was doing their bidding.
Mr. Wright was correct in his observation that were he the one doing the attacking, while in attendance at a tribal function and while being on the payroll, he would have been fired.
Unfortunately, the political implication here is that director Abramson and the other tribal officials in attendance had a stake in Mr. Pavlat's behavior. While she wouldn't make such a spectacle herself, certainly she was willing to step back and let someone else get away with it..who was doing her bidding.
A sorry situation to say the least.
Mr. Wright certainly has my admiration. He didn't let bullying or delinquency by tribal officials shape his behavior. Sticking to his principles, the council member refused to lower himself to their standards..
..and, because of it, in the end, he will win the day.

After learning more details, it seems that Cathy Abramson, Sault Tribe director, stood by and watched while Nathan Wright was verbally abused, pushed several times and blasted with racial slurs.
Director Abramson did nothing to intervene or remind Cecil Pavlat that he was on the clock. When Wright asked her what she was going to do about what just took place, she gave her usual blank stare.

ICRA..Indian Civil Rights Act
Tribal members need to be aware of the Indian Civil Rights Act (Title 25, U.S. Code) in particular, Section 1301-03. Beginning in 1962 a U.S. Senate subcommittee began a series of hearings concerning the administration of justice by tribal governments. During these hearings, according to Stephen Pevar, author of the Rights of Indians and Tribes, “tribal members testified that tribal officials were tyrannical and biased.” Pevar also writes that members requested that Congress pass legislation protecting them from further abuse. Amid allegations of misconduct and abuse of tribal authority, thousands of tribal members were living under a government who claimed that sovereign rights allowed them the option not to respect constitutional rights.
The result of the hearings was the passage of ICRA which was intended to ensure that individual Indians were protected by the broad Constitutional rights secured to other Americans from arbitrary and unjust actions of tribal governments. Tribes can discriminate against race when it comes to voting rights but other protected rights are: the right to free speech, press and assembly, so firing an employee because they were overheard talking to someone else about something tribal officials were embarrassed about, is a violation of ICRA. Using a breach of confidentiality as ‘cause’ when the reported breaches were already on the news does not qualify the information as a breach. Political retaliation is closer to the truth when it comes to the many recent firings by Sault Tribe officials.
Other ICRA rights are: protection against unreasonable search and seizure; the right to a speedy trial; the right to hire a lawyer in a criminal case; protection against self-incrimination (this is an important issue for many of the recently terminated tribal employees), protection against cruel and inhuman punishment; the right to equal protection of the laws, and due process of law.
It all sounds pretty good, right? But guess what; in most cases, the federal courts are useless when it comes to ICRA. Tribal members are supposed to be able to seek justice through their tribal courts. Isn’t that a hoot when it comes to the Sault Tribe’s tribal court that has been recently loaded with Bouschorists.
So what are the alternatives? First of all, sovereignty gives tribal members the right to take on their own system. Alternative number 2 is to petition Congress, (who has the ultimate authority over tribes) to pass laws to give tribal members the civil liberties they are entitled to. Finally, American Indians need their voices represented in Congress. Tribal members all over the country need to get behind their candidates and push hard for a bigger and louder voice in Congress to represent the rights of American Indians.

HISTORIC POWWOW OF
THE MACKINAC BANDS OF OTTAWA AND CHIPPEWA INDIANS
Even an occasional light rain didn't chase away a much larger than expected audience at the first Mackinac Bands powwow held in Rogers City in the lower peninsula of Michigan.
Renewed interest in the Mackinac Bands future was clearly evident throughout the day with many members and future members lining up for answers to their questions such as "When is the next powwow?" and "How do I find out if I am Mackinac Bands?"

SAULT TRIBE…REACHING THE FINAL COUNTDOWN?

Have you ever had the feeling that eminent doom is just around the corner? Just out of the blue, a thought crosses your mind that you should be on guard for something bad to happen but there isn’t a shred of evidence to verify those feelings. Occasionally those feelings are likely the result of certain circumstances such as your child leaving for college or a parent suddenly not feeling well. Certainly the state of the economy has a lot of people clinging to their sanity, jobs and bank accounts. But there seems to be something more going on with the Sault Tribe then what the members are aware of.
Curiously, some long time employees at the top of the heap seem to heading out of Dodge. They aren’t exactly being public about it but gossip in northern Michigan’s small towns travels fast.
Not wanting to jeopardize anyone’s job by supplying the public with detailed information takes precedence over being the first to relay the rumors so subtle hints are the best I can do. Some of the top guns are seeking employment far from the sinking Sault Tribe including at least one higher up on the tribal gaming commission. Those who have never had to worry about their position with the tribe are talking about early retirement while others are planning to put their homes on the market.
As the Sault Tribe leaders were faced with the truth that they were headed for financial disaster, threats of disenrollment, loss of benefits and voting privileges for descendents of the Mackinac Bands made by at least one Sault Tribe board director and several members of the Sault Tribe, began to circulate.
The biggest indicator of all is the sudden interest in the Mackinac Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Not only are Sault Tribe members inquiring about the status of the MB’s affirmation of federal acknowledgement but past and present leaders and business associates of the Sault Tribe seem to be leaning toward the MB. One group of Mackinac Band members (myself included) who are working towards the development of a plan for economic stability for our expanding community, understand that wind energy and other renewable resources are quickly becoming the fastest growing global industry with the promise of good paying, long-term job opportunities. Our active interest in this field is attracting investors, grant writers and attorneys who are treading lightly in the direction of the Mackinac Bands.
Now, with what appears to be a flight for safety from the jaws of the Sault Tribe’s financial problems, it may be the Mackinac Bands that eventually provides safe haven for those who have long awaited independence from the Sault Tribe. In any case, we can get this done a lot faster with a little more help and the doors are open wide for those who are ready to roll up their sleeves and pitch in.

DANGER TO THE GREAT LAKES
Friends, Associates, Tribal Members and Elected Officials:
If you don't think this is a real threat...read on and learn about this invasive fish that will ultimately destroy the Great Lakes and its eco-system. As residents and citizens of Michigan...we all better get involved with the EPA, Great Lakes United, and other organizations to learn about this invasive Asian Carp and find out how we as citizens can prevent this threat from entering into the GREAT LAKES! Ask..."What can I DO?"
Anne Thompson on NBC National News last night...had a segment on this issue and the real threat of the Asian Carp. There is only one barrier preventing this invasive species from entering the Great Lakes and it is closer than you think!

Bouschor: A Name Synonymous with Business Failures
Through the decades, Sault Tribe members have stood by helplessly and watched one tribal business fail after another. Every failed venture bore the fingerprints of one man whose name seems to breed disaster: Bernard Bouschor.
I have forgotten the names of all Bouschor’s business failures and even the number eludes me. It’s not easy to find the details and I have looked under rugs, blankets and even under the wool over the eyes of some people, but the answers seem to be covered up pretty well. If I were to send a request under the Freedom of Information Act, would I receive a reply or would the answer be something like, “Sorry, but details of the tribe’s financial affairs are not the business of tribal members.” Venturing a guess, I believe Bouschor is responsible for between 30 and 35 failures with Greektown being the Titanic of all failures.
Although Bouschor passes off his biggest failure onto the last administration, public information can verify that Greektown’s financial struggles began when Bouschor wrapped his fool’s gold finger around a pen and signed away the Sault Tribe’s future to the Greeks for a mere $25,000. How much will the tribe have invested in Greektown only to lose it all…a billion or more?
Many casinos are going under but is the debt to owners comparable to what the Sault Tribe members will feel with the loss of Greektown? It’s probably not fair to blame it all on Bouschor so we should just blame him for those failed business’s whose beginnings were based solely on his decisions. Surely, some of the failed business ventures were properly researched by competent advisors whose decisions were not controlled by Bouschor. As soon as I hear of one tribal business failure not synonymous with the name Bouschor, I’ll post it here.

Who Are the Mackinac Bands?
Who are the Mackinac Bands and the Mackinac Tribe, LLC., are they seeking federal acknowledgment, why did the Sault Tribe adopt the Mackinac Bands and how did they do it, what is the mystery surrounding the removal of John Causley, was there a break-in of the Mackinac Bands office, what is the status of the Mackinac Bands….? These are questions that linger and continue to be asked.
The Mackinac Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians were signatories on the 1836 and 1855 treaties with the United States whose members were identified and federally recognized on the Horace Durant Rolls as being a separate and unique tribe. Horace Durant was an Indian agent appointed by the Secretary of Interior to prepare a census roll between 1907 and 1910 in order to make payment to the Indians in the Mackinac area.
During the late 1970’s, the Sault Tribe Board of Directors, with Bernard Bouschor as Chairman, passed a resolution to adopt the Mackinac Bands as members of the Sault Tribe. With the approval of that resolution by the Secretary of Interior, the Sault Tribe claimed ownership to all property that belonged to the MB. Recently, a question presented to the Assistant Secretary of Interior asked why there was no required secretarial election for MB members to vote on the adoption. The MB is still waiting for an answer but maybe the answer is not one the Secretary of Interior is willing to provide. Whether or not they respond will not change the outcome that has made members of the MB second class citizens in the eyes of the Sault Tribe. Several directors and members of the Sault Tribe have argued that the 14,000 MB members, who are also Sault Tribe members, are not eligible to vote. Some Sault Tribers also dislike sharing any sort of benefits with MB members. Apparently, the Sault Tribe wanted to have their cake and eat it too but without the calories.
The Mackinac Tribe, LLC. is a group of people who splintered from the MB in April, 2008, to represent a smaller group of MB descendents. They recently dropped the LLC from their name and attempted to convince the MB, in what would have been an unwise decision, to join them as one tribe. Continuity of the MB would have been lost and the MB would have ceased to exist.
John Causley, former chairman of the MB, was removed by a vote of the board. Records belonging to the MB were obtained, not through a break-in, but with the assistance of law enforcement who accompanied MB board members while they reclaimed their property.
Causley did file a letter of intent (to file a petition for federal acknowledgment) with the Secretary of Interior. The regulations for filing are complicated but the status of the MB is not. Logically speaking, it should be easy.The difficulty is convincing the Secretary of Interior that we have been here much longer than they have, we are not going away and that we are already approved as members of a federally recognized tribe according to the treaties and the Durant Census rolls. The MB wants affirmation of recognition as well as to separate from the Sault Tribe so that we can be the unique tribe we are. We want rights to the provisions defined in the treaties of which we are signatories and we don't want the constant threat of disenrollment (by the Sault Tribe).
If you are a Mackinac Band descendant and a member of the Sault Tribe, then you only need to provide proof of your identity to become an enrolled member of the MB. For others, it will be necessary to trace ancestral history to find a family connection to the MB. Only after affirmation of federal recognition is received, will it be necessary for those who are members of both the MB and ST to choose one over the other.
Ironically, the MB has many supporters who are not members of the Sault Tribe or the Mackinac Bands and are also not American Indians but who want to assist with our efforts. The Mackinac Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians were signatories on the 1836 and 1855 treaties with the United States whose members were identified and federally recognized on the Horace Durant Rolls as being a separate and unique tribe. Horace Durant was an Indian agent appointed by the Secretary of Interior to prepare a census roll between 1907 and 1910 in order to make payment to the Indians in the Mackinac area.
During the late 1970’s, the Sault Tribe Board of Directors, with Bernard Bouschor as Chairman, passed a resolution to adopt the Mackinac Bands as members of the Sault Tribe. With the approval of that resolution by the Secretary of Interior, the Sault Tribe claimed ownership to all property that belonged to the MB. Recently, a question presented to the Assistant Secretary of Interior asked why there was no required secretarial election for MB members to vote on the adoption. The MB is still waiting for an answer but maybe the answer is not one the Secretary of Interior is willing to provide. Whether or not they respond will not change the outcome that has made members of the MB second class citizens in the eyes of the Sault Tribe. Several directors and members of the Sault Tribe have argued that the 14,000 MB members, who are also Sault Tribe members, are not eligible to vote. Some Sault Tribers also dislike sharing any sort of benefits with MB members. Apparently, the Sault Tribe wanted to have their cake and eat it too but without the calories.
The Mackinac Tribe, LLC. is a group of people who splintered from the MB in April, 2008, to represent a smaller group of MB descendents. They recently dropped the LLC from their name and attempted to convince the MB, in what would have been an unwise decision, to join them as one tribe. Continuity of the MB would have been lost and the MB would have ceased to exist.
John Causley, former chairman of the MB, was removed by a vote of the board. Records belonging to the MB were obtained, not through a break-in, but with the assistance of law enforcement who accompanied MB board members while they reclaimed their property.
Causley did file a letter of intent (to file a petition for federal acknowledgment) with the Secretary of Interior. The regulations for filing are complicated but the status of the MB is not. Logically speaking, it should be easy.The difficulty is convincing the Secretary of Interior that we have been here much longer than they have, we are not going away and that we are already approved as members of a federally recognized tribe according to the treaties and the Durant Census rolls. The MB wants affirmation of recognition as well as to separate from the Sault Tribe so that we can be the unique tribe we are. We want rights to the provisions defined in the treaties of which we are signatories and we don't want the constant threat of disenrollment (by the Sault Tribe).

The Sinking of Greektown

After reading the special edition of “ The Greektown Challenge” in the Sault Tribe paper, the picture is much clearer. Chairman McCoy feels it is unfair that critics blame only the tribe. I don’t blame the tribe. The tribe is made up of a group of members numbering close to 40,000. The vast majority of Sault Tribe members were not involved in any decisions regarding Greektown. Shouldn’t we blame the decision –makers of the tribe for the collapse of Greektown just as GM, Chrysler and several financial institutions blamed their top executives for their failure to stay ahead of change?
The first error in judgment by tribal leaders was a lack of foresight in determining potential issues with location, location, location. If you are considering the purchase of a house and the lack of garage or parking is a major issue, do you buy that house or pursue a better location where there is sufficient land to build the garage without the need to jump through hoops. Room for expansion should have been a prerequisite prior to finalizing the real estate purchase.
McCoy goes on to blame the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit for many of the financial difficulties because of increased “sin” taxes. Gambling facilities have long been the target of anti-gambling legislation, so did tribal leaders expect that opposition to gambling would suddenly go away in the future? At some point, anti-anything always wins at least part of the argument. McCoy blames Detroit for failing to provide timely zoning approvals that put a wrench in construction timelines. If it is compulsory to change a law, policy or ordinance in order to make something happen, then shouldn’t it be crucial to secure that step prior to arranging construction of such a large project?
Now tribal leaders are faced with explaining why new management has been able to increase revenue above the two competing casinos in such a short period of time. Even though the former Greektown management board and several tribal leaders blamed the previous underperformance of Greektown on the failing economy, they must now explain away the sudden increase in revenues during the worst period of a recession this country has experienced in decades. Are we missing something here…literally?
Greektown, the brainchild of former chairman Bernard Bouschor, may have been a great idea in concept but inept planning, the lack of expert counsel, and an eye focused on a fast buck may have put a hole in the boat from day one. Perhaps we should ask the Greeks, who profited greatly from their $25,000 investment, on how not to get screwed. At any rate, maybe if the tribal leaders would have considered a backup plan to diversify funds towards other viable business ventures, rather than placing all their eggs in one basket, the future of the tribe would be a little less bleak.
With job losses within the Sault Tribe reportedly in the thousands, isn’t it time to stop with the excuses and start with accountability? Only time will tell what the sinking of Greektown means for the members of the Sault Tribe.

Mackinac Bands Meets Mackinac Tribe
Apparently the lines of email communication were down when it came to the announcement of a public meeting between the Mackinac Bands and the Mackinac Tribe. One grape on the vine told me that a meeting would be held on a specific day but further inquiries went unanswered. I did manage to speak to two representatives for the Mackinac Bands though and received an email from a person who regularly sends negative posts about the MB’s and the MT’s quest to be affirmed of federal recognition.
For those that care, the Mackinac Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Bands have been around since the Horace Durant rolls said so. Anyone who is a member will be hot about that remark since the Bands existed long before the federal government reared their ugly heads. In April of 2008, half the MB board splintered away, upon the advice of an attorney, to become the Mackinac Tribe LLC. The shift was originally intended as a name change and not as a fracturing of the group but the lack of an organized effort, along with a little power shifting, resulted in a rift between the two boards. The recent meeting was arranged with two purposes in mind but those purposes were the exact opposite of what each group wanted.
The leaders of the MT expected the leaders of the MB to forget their existence and join their group. The leaders of the MB agreed to work with the MT towards federal recognition but made it clear that it would be a terrible mistake to attempt to rewrite history. A recent letter from the Secretary of Interior sent to the Mackinac Tribe LLC’s attorney indicated that the Mackinac Bands currently has representation and that splintered groups are not being considered for recognition. Previously recognized in decades past, the Mackinac Bands is seeking affirmation of recognition. One critical aspect for federal recognition or affirmation is the continuity of history, a sort of audit trail of existence. If the Mackinac Bands agreed to join with the Mackinac Tribe wouldn’t this be counterproductive to that idea.

Considering the unfavorable publicity surrounding the Sault Tribe is it any wonder that a group that could separate from the “bad kids” would do so.

How to Be a Good Sault Tribe Member for Dummies

Ten rules to being a good Sault Tribe member.
1. Never question authority.
This is by far the most important rule to becoming a faithful and obedient Sault Tribe member. Tribal Officials are the ultimate and final authority, not law enforcement as some may assume. Do not conclude that as a voting member, you have the right to opinions that may question authority.
2. Learn to nod yes effectively.
Move your head from its upright position directly downward until the chin touches the area located at the top of the breastbone. This movement signals your approval with whatever you are told by tribal officials.
3. Ignore the tribal constitution.
This document was originally intended for approval by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the purpose of obtaining federal acknowledgement and can be amended by the Sault Tribe Board of Directors only, as needed.
4. Believe everything you are told.
If tribal officials tell you that everything is hunky-dorey fine, you should believe it because they would never deceive tribal members unless it was absolutely necessary. The definition of “necessary” is at the discretion of the board and other tribal officials.
5. Do not ask for tribal financial updates.
The financial position of the tribe is none of your business. The “don’t ask-don’t tell” rule is always in effect.
6. Do not ask that the meetings be televised as before.
One of the benefits of having tribal members not living within meeting zones is that it is less complicated for tribal officials. If members can’t attend meetings, it is easier not to be held accountable. This is also easier for members come election time since a simple guess is all that is required to know who has worked in the best interest of the tribe.
7. Give back your Elder check if you received one.
The Board of Directors needs it to pay for unnecessary trips across the country to attend conferences that bring nothing of value back to the tribe.
8. Be happy that the board is not making any financial sacrifices for the tribe.
Someone has to benefit from all the money received from the land claims. Be happy that you don’t have the headaches associated with how to spend 67K a year for working a part-time job. Since members are not privy to such highly confidential information, apologies to all if the figure is higher now.
9. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
If you have heard about the FBI investigations and the discovery of the endless can of worms, put your hands over your ears. If you were a witness to questionable activities by any tribal official, cover your eyes. Place your hand over your mouth if you feel tempted to tell anyone what you have heard or seen.
10. Drink the red koolaid as soon as the effects of the first nine rules begins to wear off.

The Mackinac Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians are teaming up with the Presque Isle County Historical Museum to put on the first full-blown Powwow to ever be held in northeastern Michigan. The Powwow will feature several drum teams, singers, costumed dancers, storytellers and American Indian crafters. The Powwow is set for festival Saturday, August 8 from 1-4 p.m., but the museum's famous “buffalo burgers” will go on sale beginning at 11 a.m. The public is invited to bring a lawn chair for an interesting and educational afternoon of family-friendly entertainment celebrating the thousands of years of American Indian culture in this area. Admission is free. Thompson also said the spacious lawn of the Bradley House will be the site of an the Voyageur Rendezvous encampment by historical reenactors from around the state. The reenactors make history come alive by donning period attire and demonstrating skills that would have been practiced by the voyageurs who frequented the northern lakes during the 1700s.
